cookies be the end of affiliates? Will cookies be the end of affiliates? Or, better yet, will the LACK of cookies be the end of affiliates? Occasionally I'll run across a post on a discussion board, or get an email from someone worried about the fact that most affiliate programs use cookies to track sales. The worry is that with more and more people deleting cookies from their computers, you could be losing commissions. This is true, but does it mean you better find a new line of business? Well, this is not the end of the world, but it may signal that it's time to change your methods of promotion just a bit. Many times you can make sales the first time visitors go to the merchant's site. This is especially true if you make a good, solid recommendation or review for a product. For the most part, cookies will work just fine in those situations. The thing to cause a bit more worry are those visitors that may need to see the product several times before they decide to pull out their credit card. If those exposures take several months, there's a good chance your cookie could be removed from their computer, or it may expire, or another affiliate could send them through their link and overwrite yours. So, what can be done about this? Believe it or not, there are actually several methods you can use to help decrease your chances of losing commissions this way. The key is to focus on methods that allow you to put a refreshed cookie on their computer. This means that you get them to visit the merchant's site again using your affiliate link. Here are some ideas on how to do this: 1. Encourage repeat visits to YOUR website. You can do this by offering quality content (and lots of it) that is updated often. Consider starting your own discussion board or membership site to create a sense of 'community' for your visitors. 2. Start a weekly or monthly newsletter where you provide useful information and recommended products. 3. Create an email course, and add in your affiliate links at different intervals during the course. 4. Create ebooks with your affiliate links in them. You can give these away, or even sell them to make money on the frontend, and affiliate sales on the backend. 5. Write articles and have them syndicated to be distributed across other sites. These are just some of the ways you can have more opportunities to refresh your visitors cookies with your affiliate ID. Get creative and see what other ideas you can come up with. What can merchants do to help? Merchants can help out with the problem too. If you are a merchant, below are a few ideas you might consider. As an affiliate you might want to let your favorite affiliate program administrators know about these ideas to see if they'd consider doing some of them. Some thoughts that come to mind are: 1. Add IP logging to their affiliate system. This is where the affiliate system logs IP addresses of your visitors along your affiliate ID to a database. When a sale is made, the software can check for the existence of a cookie, and if it isn't there it can search the database for a match for the customer's IP address. This allows you to be credited even without the cookie being present. 2. Add affiliate IDs to all email followups. You'll find many affiliate programs will try to get their visitors to signup for some sort of email course, newsletter, or update list so they can have more opportunities to convert them to customers. Adding affiliate IDs to these emails enables the affiliate to have a better chance of being credited for sales referred by them. 3. Offer brandable ebooks for your affiliates to use that contain their affiliate link. This is another great way to make sure they are credited for sales because visitors will get a new cookie when they click the links in the ebooks. Bottom line with all of this is to use methods that will give you or your affiliates a better chance of getting paid for the traffic sent to your partner sites. Consider using the ideas presented in this article, and/or contact your favorite affiliate programs and see if they can implement any of these ideas for you. I personally use all of the other methods to make my living from affiliate programs.
